On Friday, Chris (our couch surfing host) told us about Makena Beach down in Kihei. We met him and his friend Todd there. They gave us wave tips and even helped bury me in the sand (those pics are on April’s camera….)

Makena is a gorgeous beach! It was a perfect day for playing in the waves. I love the beautiful blue water of Hawaii — it’s such an intense, rich color. The water was a perfect temperature on a hot day. I must say that it surprised me how salty it was. I’ve never swam in the ocean before, so this was a big day for me. The salt was almost too overwhelming for me, but then I couldn’t stop licking my lips!

The black lava rocks looked incredible in contrast to the bright white waves breaking against them. On our walk to a lookout point, we even found some wild aloe plants that stain your skin yellow….
