Dolphins and Snorkeling by Lanai

Saturday morning, bright and early, we drove to Lahaina Harbor for our Dolphin Adventure. April, Holly and I, along with 13 other passengers snuggled into a motorized raft named “Great White.” It was quite the experience, but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way! The waves and the bouncing made it thrilling.

As we got closer to the island, we all had our eyes peeled for dolphins. I like to take credit for spotting them first (although I can’t prove this is true). Now, I’ve been to Sea World before, but it does not even compare to the excitement of seeing a herd of dolphins swimming in the ocean. These were spinner dolphins. When they jumped out of the water, they’d spin and flip at the same time! The more noise we made, the better show they put on for us. Even though we had a small group, we got some great participation from the dolphins. At one time, there had to have been at least 30 dolphins above water and double that below. Incredible.

Snorkeling was also amazing. We swam in a coral reef filled with beautiful fish. My favorites were these giant black ones with an orange spot on their side. I also saw a school of black & white striped fish, some fluorescent blue and yellow fish, and a variety of others. I even saw about 5 sea turtles! They definitely reminded me of the turtles on Finding Nemo ;)

I wish I’d had an underwater camera…but I didn’t…and I was using my point-and-shoot for these to protect my nice SLR….it was almost impossible to get good photos of the dolphins….
